Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013)

The music of Henri Dutilleux is comprised of a small number of works but has been highly sought after by the major performers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His works have been commissioned by such artists a Renée Fleming, Mstislav Rostropovich, and the Boston Symphony. Known primarily for his orchestral works, there are a small number of works composed for the piano. Due to Miles’s love for French language and culture it led to this research on the early piano works of Henri Dutilleux. As a student, Sutton has had unique experience with the French school of piano playing, having spent years studying with a Parisian native and Paris Conservatory graduate. This research explores the compositional voice of Henri Dutilleux and attempts to speculate on his strict designation in his compositional output.
